FISHING REPORT - August 2nd, 2010 - Steve, Bill, Chuck, CJ, and I headed out on July 31st for a nighttime swordfish trip. We caught a few fat blue runners in the TPC and we headed out to 1600 feet of water. We put out three balloon rods, two had live runners and one had squid. We fished two tip rods with squid. No hits until 12:30 AM on August 1st. Fish explodes on shallow tip rod, which happened to be our fifth rod with a Fin-Nor Marquesa MA30T with 80 pound braid, and the fight was on. We fought it for an hour and a half with 10 pounds of drag, then bumped it to 12.5 pounds of drag for another hour. At one point, the fish thrashed the surface about 10 yards from the boat so we knew he was over 150. We finally managed to get him near the boat and he didn't want to cooperate, he dove under the boat and got the line around the motor but Bill stuck him with the first gaff and Chuck put the second gaff in him as Bill and I held on tight to gaff one. We hoisted him in the boat and headed home real early Sunday morning. Final tally, 79-inch LJF fish estimated at 220 pounds. Click here for swordfish pictures or click here for tournament pictures.
